About Kootenay Columbia
The Kootenays - one of British Columbia's best kept secrets - is one of the most fantastic areas on earth. The region has majestic mountain ranges, picturesque lakes, lush valleys, natural hot springs and charming historic communities.

Tourism is a growing business, with the spectacular Rocky, Purcell and Selkirk Mountain ranges offering their glaciers, mountain lakes and hot springs to hikers and visitors from around the world. The mighty Columbia and the Kootenay rivers are only two of the hundreds of rivers that wind their way through the valleys of Kootenay-Columbia.

The East Kootenays have many excellent ski hills, and golf courses. We boast four National Parks in the Constituency: Yoho, Kootenay, Glacier, and Mount Revelstoke. Big Game hunting with our many species is world-wide renown. Fishing is excellent in lakes and rivers. There are four major coal mines in the Elk Valley, forestry jobs in nearly every community, and an important rail transportation system. Farms, ranches and orchards make up our agriculture mix.

Surrounding the mighty Columbia River is the largest intact landlocked wetlands in North America covering 64,200 acres and extending 108 miles along the river. These wetlands support an array of wildlife and are one of the most important wildlife areas in western Canada. A second 17,000 acre wetland of International significance is situated in the Creston Valley.

Kootenay residents have struck and healthy balance between work and play respecting our spectacular natural environment. And, those who have travelled and experienced Kootenay Columbia, will tell you the surroundings are magnificent but equally so is the warmth and hospitality of the people.
